The car or minivan tour from Palermo to Agrigento lasts a full day and takes you to two unique and very different places: the Valley of the Temples and the Scala dei Turchi.

The Valley of the Temples is one of the most important Greek archaeological sites in the Mediterranean: the temples are visible from a distance, set against the sky and the Agrigento countryside.

The Scala dei Turchi is a few kilometres from the city: a white marl cliff that descends to the sea in natural steps, smoothed by erosion into a shape unlike anything else on the Sicilian coast.

From Palermo to Agrigento: Visiting the Valley of the Temples

The first stop in Agrigento is the Valley of the Temples, a 1,300-hectare archaeological park with Greek temples and necropolises set among Mediterranean vegetation, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

During the visit you can explore several temples, among the most important of which are:

• The Temple of Concordia, the best preserved: built in the 5th century BC, it survived almost intact because it was converted into a church in the Middle Ages.
• The Temple of Juno, on the edge of the ridge with an open view over the countryside, and the Temple of Hercules, the oldest in the area, with eight columns still standing.
• The famous Temples of Castor and Pollux, with four reassembled columns that have become the symbol of the city.

And finally, don’t miss the Temple of Olympian Zeus, which in its original form would have been one of the largest religious buildings in the ancient world.

The Second Stop: Scala dei Turchi

The second stop is the Scala dei Turchi, near Realmonte. The white marl cliff descends to the sea in steps, smoothed by wind and waves. In the middle of the day, the white of the rock, the blue of the sea and the yellow of the sand create a striking contrast.

You walk along the rock, descend toward the sea and can swim in the bay below. The cliff is impressive both from below and from above: two very different perspectives, and both are worth taking the time for.
