On the border between the provinces of Messina and Catania, just a few kilometres from the Taormina coast, Sicily’s natural beauty takes shape in the stunning Alcantara Gorges<\/strong>, a place where the icy water of the Alcantara River runs through a twenty-five-metre-deep cleft of black basalt, carved over thousands of years.<\/p>\n

The origin of the Alcantara Gorges lies in the meeting of fire and water, when a powerful lava flow from Monte Mojo<\/strong>, a small parasitic cone on the northern side of Etna, invaded the ancient course of the river. The sudden cooling on contact with the current fractured the rock into perfect vertical prisms, known as organ pipes<\/strong>. With the patience of centuries, the constant flow of water completed the work, trimming and smoothing the basalt walls.<\/p>\n

Today this protected ecosystem is part of the Alcantara River Park<\/strong>, established in 2001, and here is all the information you need to plan your visit without surprises, choosing the right entrance and avoiding the summer crowds.<\/p>\n

How to access the canyon: public or private?<\/h2>\n

Exploring the Alcantara Gorges involves two quite different types of entrance, to be chosen according to the kind of experience you’re looking for and the level of accessibility you need. The first option is the municipal entrance<\/strong> run by the town of Motta Camastra, located along the SS 185 road, which gives access to the riverbed via a stone staircase of about two hundred steps: the way down from this entrance is lovely and the ticket is inexpensive, but the climb back up takes some physical effort, especially if you’re travelling in summer.<\/p>\n

A little further along the same road is the Botanical and Geological Park<\/strong>, a private complex with paid admission. The ticket includes the descent to the canyon by two lifts carved into the rock, as well as the chance to walk the upper panoramic trails that run along the edge of the gorge through a garden full of Mediterranean plants. This second option is ideal for families with children, people with less hiking experience or simply anyone who wants to avoid the stairs.<\/p>\n

Once you reach the riverbed, you can stop on the small pebble beaches or try heading upstream. In several stretches the canyon narrows to just a few metres, where light barely filters in. Since the water temperature rarely goes above 10 or 12 degrees even in the middle of August, if you want to go beyond the first stretches it’s recommended to rent the waders<\/strong> available on site.<\/p>\n

If you want to go several hundred metres up the riverbed, the best solution is to book a body rafting<\/strong> or river trekking session with authorised guides. Equipped with a neoprene wetsuit, helmet and life jacket, you’ll move through water corridors, rapids and small rock jumps, a dynamic experience that takes you to the most remote and wild corners of the canyon.<\/p>\n

Tips for getting to the Alcantara Gorges<\/h2>\n

One of the best ways to reach the Alcantara Gorges is by car, especially if you’re starting from the seaside resorts of Taormina or Giardini Naxos: from here you take the SS 185 towards Francavilla di Sicilia, and the drive takes about twenty minutes. From Catania<\/strong> the journey takes around an hour, and you’ll need to get on the A18 motorway and follow it to the Giardini Naxos exit.<\/p>\n

Another option is the bus: regional lines connect Taormina station with the Gorges, but the frequency of services varies a lot depending on the season and it’s essential to check return times so you don’t get stuck. Alternatively, you can join a day tour with shuttle included.<\/p>\n

One tip: remember that access to the riverbed depends on water levels, so in case of storms upstream or recent rain, entry into the water is suspended for safety reasons. That’s why it’s always a good idea to check the weather before setting off.<\/p>\n

When to visit the Alcantara Gorges<\/h2>\n

The Alcantara Gorges are best visited in summer, from June to September, when the water level is stable, the outside temperatures make contact with the cold current enjoyable, and you can go hiking and rafting in the river in pleasant weather.<\/p>\n

In July and August<\/strong>, however, visitor numbers peak, with large crowds especially in the early afternoon, so the best time to visit the canyon is first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon. In May and October, on the other hand, temperatures are generally lower but you can enjoy a bright landscape and a relaxed atmosphere. Be careful though, because the water is colder and the river’s flow may vary, which could limit access to the inner stretches.<\/p>\n

During winter the river usually can’t be walked, but you can still visit the gorges from above by following the panoramic trails of the Botanical Park.<\/p>\n

What to see near the Alcantara Gorges: villages, vineyards and the sea<\/h2>\n

Exploring the Alcantara Gorges usually takes about three or four hours, and the rest of the day naturally continues in the Alcantara Valley<\/strong>, an area known for its historic villages and outstanding food and wine heritage.<\/p>\n

A few minutes’ drive away is Castiglione di Sicilia<\/strong>, perched on a volcanic hill overlooking the valley. Part of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy network, it preserves the ruins of Lauria Castle and offers striking viewpoints. This area is also the beating heart of Etna DOC winemaking, with many historic wineries offering guided vineyard tours and tastings of Nerello Mascalese and Carricante.<\/p>\n

On the other side of the valley stands Francavilla di Sicilia<\/strong>, a medieval fiefdom dominated by the remains of its Norman castle, near which you’ll find the Gurne dell’Alcantara<\/em>, a series of small natural pools carved into the rock, perfect for a quiet break surrounded by greenery. Finally, a short climb takes you to Motta Camastra, a village clinging to a cliff that offers an authentic glimpse of life in Sicily’s inland towns.<\/p>\n

Heading down towards the coast, the itinerary comes to a natural end between the ancient history of Giardini Naxos<\/strong>, site of the first Greek colony in Sicily, founded in the 8th century BC, and the architectural and natural heritage of Taormina<\/strong>, with its famous Ancient Theatre overlooking Isola Bella.<\/p>\n
