Ceramics is a craft you truly understand only with your hands: you need to feel the clay under your fingers, sense how much it resists, when it gives way, when it is ready to become a form.

In Ragusa, a baroque city and UNESCO World Heritage Site, there is a workshop where this practice is still part of daily life, led by ceramicists who have been working with clay for years and teach it in a direct, straightforward way.

Hand building does not require the wheel. Volumes are constructed using techniques such as pinching and coiling: rolling the clay, layering spirals, working edge by edge. The pace is slower, almost meditative, and allows for less regular, more personal forms.

Decoration and finishing: once the shape is ready, you move on to glazes, slips, incisions and natural pigments. This is the moment when the piece finds its definitive character, before the final firing in the kiln that sets the colour and texture.
