The tour from Syracuse to Cavagrande del Cassibile combines trekking with a visit to the natural pools of the nature reserve.
Cavagrande del Cassibile is a nature reserve just a few kilometres from Syracuse, hidden inland, where the Cassibile river has carved a limestone canyon with walls that in some points reach over 400 metres in height.
Beyond the canyon you can reach the natural pools of the reserve, surrounded by woodland and filled with clear water that shifts toward an intense turquoise.
Tour from Syracuse: Trekking and Walking at Cavagrande del Cassibile
The tour departs from Syracuse and takes you to Cavagrande del Cassibile, where the trekking experience begins at the edge of the canyon. The path runs alongside the rocky walls that rise on both sides, through Mediterranean vegetation that changes as you descend toward the pools.
Throughout the trek a guide accompanies the group, explaining the history and geology of the canyon, pointing out the vegetation that grows along the route and the wildlife that lives in the reserve, including herons, freshwater turtles and birds of prey that can be spotted along the river.
At the end of the route you reach the Cavagrande pools: natural bodies of water fed by the Cassibile river, with a clarity and colour that are hard to put into words.
In summer, or on warm days, you can swim in the pools. In other seasons you can sit by the water, eat your packed lunch, take in the surroundings and rest in the silence of the woodland before heading back up.
