Etna by Cable Car and Jeep guided tour

Mount Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe, a natural wonder offering unique and spectacular landscapes that are even more breathtaking when seen from above. That’s why one of the most incredible tours is undoubtedly the ascent to 3,000 metres aboard the Etna cable car.

After the initial journey on the Etna cable car, the tour combines reaching the final destination at 3,000 metres with a trip in a 4×4 bus led by an expert guide.

A Breathtaking Tour on Etna

The Etna cable car tour offers a unique and thrilling experience, starting from Piazzale Rifugio Sapienza, the departure point for the cable car, located on the southern slope of the volcano in the municipality of Nicolosi.

The adventure begins with a cable car ride starting at an altitude of 1,923 metres, reaching the upper station at 2,500 metres.

Along the way, you’ll enjoy a privileged view of extinct craters and be treated to the unparalleled beauty of the Sicilian coastline—a truly unique sight.

Reach 3,000 Metres by 4×4 Bus

From the upper station, the journey continues aboard special 4×4 buses, authorised to travel the only road leading to the maximum altitude allowed by the authorities, currently set at around 3,000 metres.

This road is privately owned by the Etna Cable Car, meaning no private vehicles or quads are permitted. Along the way, you’ll pass through lunar landscapes shaped by recent lava flows and smoking craters—evidence of the ongoing activity of Europe’s highest volcano.

Explore Etna with Alpine and Volcanological Guides

Once you reach the 3,000-metre altitude, the tour continues with a guided walk among craters and lava fields.

The highly specialised Alpine and Volcanological Guides provide detailed explanations of Etna’s geological history, its past eruptions, and the unique characteristics of its landscape.

This part of the experience allows you to witness the power of nature up close and appreciate the allure of an ever-changing active volcano.

The Return Journey After the Tour

After exploring the summit area, the return journey follows the same route by 4×4 bus back to the cable car station, and then the cable car down to the departure point at 1,923 metres. It’s a journey that leaves lasting memories and offers plenty of opportunities for stunning photographs.

What Are the Tour Highlights?

During the excursion, you’ll have the chance to visit some of Etna’s most fascinating spots, including:

  • Torre del Filosofo, an ancient scientific observatory at 2,900 metres.

  • The 2002 Craters, formed during one of the most powerful eruptions of the last century.

  • The Summit Craters, representing the highest and most active part of the volcano.

These are just a few of the main highlights that showcase the volcano’s extraordinary natural beauty.

Ready for the Etna Cable Car Tour? Tips to Prepare!

The Etna Cable Car service operates daily from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., depending on weather conditions and technical requirements. The last descent by cable car is scheduled for 3:50 p.m. It is always advisable to book in advance to secure the best time slot to suit your plans.

In Which Languages Is the Tour Available?

The guides speak several languages, including Italian and English, to make the experience accessible to everyone.

Who Is the Tour Not Recommended For?

This excursion is not suitable for everyone. Specifically, it is not recommended for individuals with heart conditions, high blood pressure, or for pregnant women, due to the physical demands of a high-altitude tour.

What Clothing Is Recommended?

Since the higher altitude means cooler temperatures than at the volcano’s base, it’s important to wear appropriate clothing. Specifically, it’s recommended to wear:

  • Sports or trekking shoes

  • Mountain-appropriate clothing, including windproof jackets

  • Gloves and a hat, especially during the colder months

If you don’t have suitable gear, shoes and windbreakers can be rented at the cable car’s upper station at 2,500 metres.

What Is Not Allowed?

For safety reasons, you cannot bring everything you wish. Large luggage is not permitted, and unless you have been expressly authorised, you cannot bring a drone.
