There are two places in Sicily you simply have to see: its volcano, the majestic Etna, and the wonderful Taormina, one of the most famous seaside towns on the island.

Leaving Palermo on our private car or minivan tour, you can reach Etna and Taormina in a single day and experience two completely different places, both among the highlights of any trip to Sicily.

From Palermo to Etna: Discovering the Largest Active Volcano in Europe

The first stop is Etna. The volcano is reached by climbing through vegetation that changes as you gain altitude: first forests of holm oaks and chestnut trees, then birches, then the lunar landscape of the upper slopes, where lava has left black expanses broken up by extinct craters and solidified flows.

The tour takes you up to the highest points reachable by car or minivan, from where you can walk among the craters and take in the view that stretches across eastern Sicily all the way to the coast.

On clear days you can see the sea on one side and the inland hills on the other.

Etna is an active volcano and the landscape changes constantly: what you see will depend on the time of year you visit.

Second Stop: Taormina, a Historic Centre and a View Worth the Journey

After Etna, the second stop is Taormina, clinging to the rock two hundred metres above the sea between Messina and Catania.

The historic centre is best explored on foot along Corso Umberto, the main street that runs through the town from one gate to the other, with shops, cafés and glimpses of the sea opening up between the side alleys.

The highlight of the visit is the Ancient Theatre, built by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC and later expanded by the Romans. The cavea looks toward Etna on one side and the Bay of Naxos on the other: it is one of the most famous views in Sicily and in person it does not disappoint.

Beyond the theatre, Taormina is also worth exploring for the Villa Comunale with its gardens overlooking the sea, Piazza IX Aprile with its panoramic terrace, and the Cathedral of San Nicola in the heart of the historic centre.
