Are you looking for information on a guided walking tour Catania and Riviera Ciclopi? Continue reading this guide and find out all the information you need to organize an excursion (even for groups).

Walking tour: discovering Catania and the Riviera dei Ciclopi

To discover the area of Catania and the adjacent Riviera dei Ciclopi, nothing is more suitable than a walking tour with an experienced and qualified guide, also available for groups upon reservation.

Generally the first part of the tour is devoted to the discovery of Catania, a city that manages to enchant on first impression and is at the same time very practical to explore on foot thanks to its small size.

The Etnean capital certainly stands out for its Baroque-style buildings, which tell of the best architectural tradition of these areas.

The guided walking tour of Catania includes a visit to the cathedral, dedicated to the city’s patron saint, St. Agatha.

The tour continues with Piazza del Liotru; Via Crociferi; the Benedictine convent; and the splendid Roman amphitheater, one of the largest and most important examples of this type of structure in Italy.

The Aci tour: the mythical Riviera of the Cyclops

Once the visit to the city of Catania is concluded, the walking tour continues next with the exploration of the beautiful Riviera dei Ciclopi.

This geographical designation includes that area between Acireale, Acitrezza and Acicastello: it is a tongue of land that unites some of the most spectacular seaside villages in the Bel Paese.

The tour begins with a visit to Acireale, a small town where the Cathedral, the Piazza del Duomo and the Basilica Collegiata di San Sebastiano will catch the eye of architecture enthusiasts.

We continue by going to Aci Trezza, where thanks to its small size, one can be fascinated by the legends dedicated to the myths of Polyphemus, which here have even influenced the toponymy of the natural rock formations in the middle of the sea.

Next comes Aci Castello, which, as its name suggests, is home to a marvelous fortification of uncertain origin but which played a crucial role in the development of Aci in the Middle Ages.

Pantalica Reserve

Visit one of the most striking archaeological sites ever: Pantalica. Better known as the Rock Necropolis of Pantalica, we find out in this guide what to see on a specially organized tour.

The Necropolis of Pantalica

We are in the province of Syracuse, in the beautiful Sicilian island, between the municipalities of Ferla and Sortino.

Here we can see one of the most beautiful and extraordinary archaeological sites dating back to the Late Bronze Age, roughly around the first half of the 13th century BC.

Precisely in the Anapo Valley, carved out over time by the Cava Grande stream and suspended in the rocks, well over 5,000 tombs can be discerned, forming the complex of the Necropolis of Pantalica, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. The archaeological site, accessible from the inland road that descends from the Hyblean Mountains to the Gulf of Syracuse, includes five large necropolis with characteristic “artificial cave” tombs.

How to get to Pantalica

The tour of Pantalica is certainly very exciting, especially because to get to the “artificial” necropolis you have to cross a series of paths, starting from Ferla or Sortino, which for some stretches are quite arduous.

In fact, you even have two choices

The first is to take the path from the town of Ferla that leads directly and with little effort to Pantalica;
the second, the more exciting and wild one, starts from Sortino and requires a somewhat longer walk, which is worth undertaking if only to visit the monument called the “Prince’s Palace,” also known as the
How to gear up to go to Pantalica
There is no public transportation to reach this destination, so in order to reach it, one must either equip oneself with one’s own transportation or participate in some guided tours.

From Pantalica you then need good legs, comfortable clothing, hiking shoes and also basic necessities (food and water) because the area is not equipped with refreshment stations.

Etna – Alcantara Gorges (full day)

Are you interested in discovering the beauty of Mount Etna and the Alcantara Gorges? Book your full-day tour now and explore the breathtaking volcanic landscapes of Etna, also known as Mongibello, located in the eastern region of Sicily in the province of Catania.

Visit to Etna: what you need to know

Formed around 500,000 years ago, Etna is currently the tallest volcano on the European continent, rising over 3,300 meters above sea level, and is considered one of the most active in the world. Due to its ongoing activity, it is constantly shrouded in a cloud of smoke that scatters dust and small rocks into the air, which then fall to the ground. Its activity typically begins with a phase of gas release, followed by ash emissions and eventually magmatic eruptions. Along its slopes, one can admire various landscapes, ranging from fertile countryside filled with citrus groves to dense forests of chestnut, oak, and pine trees, to barren landscapes where the scent of broom dominates, until reaching the lunar expanses near the crater, creating a unique and breathtaking experience.

Etna excursion: discovering the lava flow caves

The final destination of the excursion is to explore one of the fascinating lava flow caves that were formed by a process called “lava ingrottamento.” This occurs when lava cools quickly on the outside due to contact with the air and the ground over which it flows. Etna has several such caves, which are generally created by lava eruptions that leave behind steep cliffs characterized by stalactites and conical columns formed by gas concentrations and lava residue. The most famous among them is the Frost Cave, where perennial ice can be found, making it an extraordinary and must-see sight.

      Visit to the Alcantara Gorges

Named after the very river that runs through them, the Alcantara Gorges represent a “natural canyon” characterized by very cold waters (about 8 degrees), topped by basaltic rock walls that are more than 15 meters high and extend for more than 6 km.
To reach the Gorges, a path runs along the left bank of the river and passes unique viewpoints.

Etna – Taormina Excursion (full day)

Are you looking for useful information about participating in an Etna excursion and want to visit the beautiful and luxurious Taormina? Well, then if you happened to be in just the right guide.

Etna excursion: discovering the “good giant” of Europe

Etna (also called Mongibello) is the highest active volcano in Europe, extending over 3300 meters in height with a basal diameter of about 40 km rising in the eastern slope of Sicily.
It is classified as a “shield” volcano in that it is generated by fluid lava flows that as they cool visually give the impression of a shield.
Etna excursion: the landscape, fauna and flora
Visiting its territory it is possible to admire different morphological aspects depending on the altitude.
Up to 1,000 meters on the eastern and southern slopes it is cultivated and urbanized, while on the western slope it is more bare and is dominated by the scent from the gorse bushes. On the northern slope are dense forests of chestnut and oak trees.
As for wildlife: if wolves, deer and roe deer dwelled one century, today they are practically extinct.
For those who hike Mount Etna can admire and encounter small animals such as porcupine, marmot, dormouse and weasel that live together with raptors, peregrine falcon, kestrel, golden eagle, barn owl, barn owl, tawny owl and others.

      Etna excursion: caves and gorges

Because of the volcano’s continuous lava-spewing activity, the landscape surrounding Etna is varied and picturesque.
Thanks to this orogenic activity on Etna, “lava flow caves” have formed over time, which cool faster on the outside, on the inside, remain almost “empty” as lava continues to move.
The most famous is Frost Cave, a unique and deep canyon with perennial ice.
Another breathtaking location to visit are the Alcantara Gorges, formed by the erosion of the icy waters of the river from which they take their name.
In 2013, the volcano was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

      Excursion to discover Taormina

Because of its almost strategic location, it is possible to continue the tour by making an excursion to Taormina.
In this “little gem” you can admire: the Greek Theater, the municipal villa, the Corvaja Palace, the Cathedral, the Palace of Santo Stefano and Isola Bella.
